A man who laced candy with sleeping medication and gave them to youngsters at a summer camp in Leicestershire has confessed to sexual crimes against two young males aged nine and 10.

The defendant was detained after eight children and an older person experienced illness at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

Yet, he disputed one particular crime he was accused of, which was involving a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was remanded in custody prior to a additional proceeding on November 28th.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, prosecuting, detailed Ruben's offending to the court.

She explained his targets were under-privileged children who were participating in a summer camp which he ran.

The man conducted a "treat game" with the children, the legal counsel said, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to ingest treats "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge Ruben had played this game with the children "repeatedly", and children had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She said Ruben had been capable of justifying this for many years as the minors being "overexcited from fun", until his stepson had worries in recently.

The prosecutor added: "This year his family member had worries about what was going on, with valid cause.

"They decided to investigate in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel explained items including baby oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were discovered, and his stepchild notified the authorities about his worries.

She stated the man continued to engage in the "sweet game" with six boys that time - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the following morning.

"The police had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was investigating the police response of the events.

The legal representative stated the minors were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so the stepson notified the authorities again.

She stated Ruben then played the "sweet game" in a space of five minors.
