One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, after the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
