In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
