British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
